5 Things That Happen When Wrapping Holiday Gifts Around Cats

Add wrapping holiday gifts around cats to the list of holiday mishaps and our feline friends. Here’s one writer's experience.

I love the holidays. I’m one of those people who crank up the Christmas music, bakes cookies, and does all that general cheeriness business that irritates the hell out of some people. I don’t care — I’m a loud-n-proud Christmas dork. I do draw the line at eggnog, though… yuck! Another part of the holidays that I don’t really look forward to is wrapping holiday gifts around my cats. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the act of creating pretty presents — my cats just don’t always make it easy for me to create those pretty presents. Plus, I live in a small apartment, so surfaces are hard to come by. In other words, the cats are at the ready with “helping paws” no matter where I choose to spread my supplies.
I just finished wrapping and boxing gifts for my family in Florida, and, as expected, Cosmo and Phoebe were busy little elves. Here are five ways they hindered my gift-wrapping efforts. I’m sure you can relate.

1. Lying on top of the wrapping paper

“Thanks for the cool new bed, Mom — you’re the best.”
It’s no secret that cats prefer to lie on high on “stuff.” This includes something from stacks of paper to a small Post-It Note. It makes total sense that they’d be everywhere a layer of paper unfold across the ground. I swear Cosmo galloped to the paper the second he detected the crinkling of its unrolling. Then he at once found a spot to settle. wherever was that spot? Right, wherever I required to be, naturally. after all, I removed him, however, he at once came. There should be some scientific law that explains that attraction. If you discover it, let ME grasp.

2. Chewing tape

Phoebe creates yet another sticky situation.
Phoebe has continually been an ill-famed tape-chewer. In fact, she loves all things sticky. I even have to toss stickers and Post-It Notes in a very container behind a cupboard or she’ll maniacally dig around my workplace bin till she finds them. If she will manage to chomp down on a roll of tape, she takes wing with it sort of a bat out of hell, sport to a secure house wherever she will be able to be alone with “her pretty.” In true kind, she was a little chomp-chomp this point around.

3. Bag- and bow-tampering
If they really want to be front-and-center, they’re gonna get wrapped, too.
Gift bags? They get in them. Bows? They chew them. I now not purchase crisp ribbon as a result of Phoebe can eat it, that isn’t cool or safe in the least (here’s what to try and do if your cat fare string!). For years my gifts went bow-less, till I discovered cloth ribbons. Sure, the cats sometimes attempt to chew on them, however, they don’t get terribly way. Bags, although — they jump within those suckers, whether or not or not they’re holding gifts that don't belong to them. Cats don’t provide a rip.

4. General meddling and snarkiness
“You’re the meanest mom ever.”
The kitties assume the entire gift-wrapping state of affairs may be a game and ar not-so-pleased once I don’t allow them to “win.” They relish standing in the middle of the provides craving for what they will play with then get mad once I cue them they can’t play with all the provides. To distract them, I’ve learned to position many open pieces of baggage and boxes close to my space. I showed them that these things are a victim and that they occupy themselves for slightly before they are available back desperate to be front and center in my method.

5. Box inspection
Cosmo should get a job with the TSA. For real.
I finally finished wrapping my family’s gifts and, thankfully, all of them work into one cardboard box. once I ran for the packing tape, Cosmo set he’d examine my packing job. He was an intensive box-checker, Associate in Nursing even tried to climb within for an extra-close look. Either that or he was making an attempt to hide out. I can’t say I’d blame him. UN agency wouldn’t wish to hide out from the frigid North Star State Gregorian calendar month to Florida’s sunny skies?
