I don’t keep track of the number of books I read each year, but my best guess is somewhere between 150 and 200, and at least half of them have something to do with cats.
I made a commitment to myself long ago that I would never post a bad book review. I feel that every author pours his or her heart and soul into a book, and just because I don’t like a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good book. As a result, if you see a book reviewed here on the site, it means that I really liked it. This makes it challenging each year to pick only ten favorites.
Here are my ten favorites for this year, in no particular order. Click on the book cover images to order from Amazon.
The Cat Sitter and the Canary
The Cat Sitter mystery series, featuring Dixie Hemingway, a pet sitter who lives on one of the Florida Keys, has been a favorite of mine ever since the first book in the series came out eight years ago. This latest installment once again made me happy that I could visit the lush tropical setting and catch up with familiar characters. For me, reading this series is almost as good as a mid-winter trip to Florida.
The Lost Cats and Lonely Hearts Club
Reading contemporary romance novels is one of my guilty pleasures, and when the book features a cat, so much the better! The Lost Cats and Lonely Hearts Club by Nic Tatano is one of the most delightful books in the genre that I’ve come across in quite some time, and what’s even better, it’s part of a series. And it features a tortoiseshell kitten – how much better can a book get!
The Inner Life of Cats
In The Inner Life of Cats: The Science and Secrets of Our Mysterious Feline Companions, Thomas McNamee provides fascinating insights into the complicated world of our mysterious cats. Science is finally beginning to understand just how complex feline communication and emotions may be, and the author provides information from past and current studies that will have you nod your head in recognition, but also cause plenty of “aha” moments. But best of all, the author illustrates the scientific findings with anecdotes of his own beloved cat Augusta, from the time he and his wife rescued the little black kitten on a snowy night in Montana to her final days fifteen years later.
Molly and the Cat Café
If you loved A Street Cat Named Bob or Oliver, the Cat Who Saved Christmas, you’re going to love Molly and the Cat Café. This charming story about a homeless cat and a little café that was struggling to stay in business are about as heartwarming as a cat book gets.
The Sunshine Cat’s Choice
This second book in Nic Tatano’s series about four women and their cats has plenty of twists and turns. All of the characters are immensely likable, and the relationship between A.J. and her cat Gypsy is beautifully described. You can feel the love between the two come off the pages.
Dog as My Doctor, Cat as My Nurse
In Dog as My Doctor, Cat as My Nurse: An Animal Lover’s Guide to a Healthy, Happy, and Extraordinary Life, animal-human health expert Carlyn Montes de Oca explores how our relationship with our furry family members holds the keys to optimal health. Heartwarming, thought-provoking and inspirational, this book gives new meaning to the term “whole health,” taking the concept beyond just body, mind and spirit to include our animal companions.
Total Cat Mojo: The Ultimate Guide to Life With Your Cat
Total Cat Mojo is the definitive guide to cat behavior and cat care. Even if your cats are purrfect little angels, this book will make you view your relationship with them in a new light. And if your cats aren’t always behaving the way you’d like them to, or if you have one of those cats from hell that you see on Jackson’s show, this book will not just arm you with the knowledge you need to make things better for both cat and human, it will also provide you with the compassion and commitment you need to mend not just the cat’s behavior, but also your broken relationship.
Buddhism for Pet Lovers
In Buddism for Pet Lovers: Supporting Our Closest Companions Through Life and Death, David Michie explores the deep connection between us and our animal companions. This book is written from the heart by one of the greatest teachers of mindfulness and Buddhism in the West. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to have a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with these wonderful cats (and other pets) who share our lives.
Real Men Love Cats
The fourth and final book in Nic Tatano’s series about four friends and their four cats delivers romance, lovable human and feline characters and plenty of plot twists to keep you turning the pages.
